Squantum School 1919

“The plan to build a school in Squantum was announced in the Quincy Daily Ledger on June 27, 1917 in an article declaring ‘there will be a great rejoicing in Squantum.’

At the time, Chairman of the Quincy School Committee, John Mackay “believed that Squantum citizens should be encouraged to remain part of this peninsula community and that a new school would attract committed families who would advocate for Squantum’s needs.”

Squantum School was occupied for the first time 100 years ago in 1919.    The idea of committed families and the school motto on the sign in the front of the school still ring true today.  “Squantum is a great place to start.”

Special thanks to our own Dr. Bloom for capturing the history of our school in her recent book:  A Great Place to Start: History of The Squantum School.  The quotes above are from her book.

Please save Saturday, March 28th as a date for celebrating the proud history of Squantum School.   Mayor Koch, the Quincy School Committee, Superintendent DeCristofaro as well as staff and families from our school community over the years.

The celebration will include a student video using Dr. Bloom’s book as a guide with students traveling through each of the decades sharing information about what the school and learning were like during various periods in the history of the school.  Guests will be treated to decades of photos and endless memories of an incredible school and history.  We hope you will save the date and join us to celebrate the proud history and the incredible impact our School continues to have on the Squantum community.

Please contact the school if you wish to share information or want to help with planning this great celebration.                     Mr. Sylvia
